For tree service owners
How do I grow a tree service past one crew?
Short answer
Grow when your calendar is full and you keep saying no to good work. Before you add a second crew, know your cost per crew hour, have enough steady leads to keep both crews busy, and have a person you trust to lead the new crew. Add equipment only when the jobs justify it.

The longer answer
Growth is not about being busy, it is about being profitable while busy. If one crew is booked far ahead and you are turning down work, a second crew may make sense. If you are slow some weeks, a second crew will only add cost.
First, check the numbers. Do you know the profit on each job type? Do you know what a second crew costs in wages, taxes, insurance, truck and equipment? Add it up before you commit.
Second, check the leads. A second crew needs a steady stream of work. Look at how many calls you miss, how fast you follow up on estimates, and how many estimates you win. Often the lost work you already paid for is the cheapest source of growth.
Third, check the people. A new crew needs a trained, trusted leader who works safely and treats customers well. You cannot be on two job sites at once. If you cannot name that person yet, wait.
Fourth, check your systems. Written estimates, job tickets, a shared schedule and a plan for follow-up let you step back from daily decisions.
Finally, grow in steps. Add one crew, watch the results for a few months, then decide the next move. Rapid growth that outruns your cash is how healthy companies get into trouble.
