For developers and AI builders
A free open data API for trees and tree rules

/api/v1/tools.json | Every free Lirevon tool with its link. | 71 |
/api/v1/glossary.json | Plain-English definitions of tree and business terms. | 199 |

Examples
curl
# All species (short rows)
curl -s https://lirevon.com/api/v1/species.json
# One species
curl -s https://lirevon.com/api/v1/species/red-maple.json
# Licence rules for one state
curl -s https://lirevon.com/api/v1/licensing/north-carolina.json JavaScript fetch
const res = await fetch('https://lirevon.com/api/v1/licensing/north-carolina.json');
const data = await res.json();
console.log(data.state.name); // "North Carolina"
console.log(data.state.treeWork); // status, details, sources
console.log(data.license, data.url); // "CC BY 4.0", page to link to What every file looks like
Each file starts with the same fields: who made it, the licence, the page to link to and the build date. The data sits under one key such as species, state, city or items.

Attribution and fair use
- Credit "Lirevon (lirevon.com)" near the data, and link to the page in the file's
urlfield. - Say if you changed the data, and link to the CC BY 4.0 licence.
- Licence and city rules are short explanations, not legal advice. Keep the source links and checked dates with the data.
- These are static files. Please cache them, and do not fetch the same file more than about once an hour.
MCP server
Use the data inside an AI assistant
The Lirevon MCP server lets AI assistants that support the Model Context Protocol look up the same data while they answer. It is read-only, free and needs no key.
Endpoint: https://app.lirevon.com/api/mcp
Tools
lookup_tree_speciesFacts for a tree species: size, zones, roots, storm risk, pruning time.lookup_tree_problemSigns, season, hosts and next steps for one pest or disease.tree_service_license_rulesTree work licence rules for a state, with official sources.tree_removal_permitPermit and protected tree rules for a city, with sources.tree_care_by_stateCommon trees, pests, storm season and pruning timing for a state.tree_care_calendarWhat to do with trees in a given month, by US region.tree_service_market_statsAggregate numbers from our market check of tree companies.find_free_toolFinds a free Lirevon tool or calculator for a task.answer_tree_questionBest matching short answers and glossary terms for a question.
The server allows 60 calls a minute and 600 an hour per address. Your client shows the current tool list when it connects, and we may add tools over time.
Add it to Claude Desktop
The simplest way is Settings, then Connectors, then add a custom connector with the endpoint above. Or edit claude_desktop_config.json and restart the app. This version uses a small bridge that needs Node.js installed:
{
"mcpServers": {
"lirevon": {
"command": "npx",
"args": ["-y", "mcp-remote", "https://app.lirevon.com/api/mcp"]
}
}
} Other MCP clients
Clients that support remote servers over HTTP can point straight at the endpoint. The exact file name and keys differ by client; this is the common shape:
{
"mcpServers": {
"lirevon": {
"type": "http",
"url": "https://app.lirevon.com/api/mcp"
}
}
} The same CC BY 4.0 credit applies when an assistant quotes the data. Ask the assistant to quote the page link from each answer.
Agent-ready
A manifest for AI agents
AI agents and tools can find our MCP server without reading this page. The file lists the endpoint, the transport, the tools and a contact address: /.well-known/mcp.json. Security reports go to the address in /.well-known/security.txt.
Common questions
Is the API really free?
Yes. There is no key, no sign-up and no paid tier. The files are licensed CC BY 4.0, so you can use them in apps, articles and research, including for business, as long as you credit Lirevon and link back.
How do I credit Lirevon?
Show "Source: Lirevon (lirevon.com)" near the data and link to the page in the url field of the file you used, for example a species or state page. In an app, a credits screen with the same line and link is fine.
Is there a rate limit?
These are static files, so there is no hard limit. Please cache them and do not fetch the same file more than about once an hour. The data changes only when the site is rebuilt, and the updated field tells you when that was.
How often does the data change?
Each time lirevon.com is rebuilt, the files are made fresh from the same data that powers the site pages. The updated field shows the build date. Licence and city rule files also carry the date we checked the official source.
Can I trust the licence and city rule data?
Every rule links to the official source we used. Where we could not confirm a rule, the file says so instead of guessing. It is a short explanation, not legal advice, and rules change, so check with the state or city before you rely on it.
Does the market data name any tree companies?
No. The market file holds counts and shares only, for the total, each state and each metro area. No company name, owner or phone number is in any file.
What is the MCP server?
MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard that lets AI assistants call outside tools. Our server at https://app.lirevon.com/api/mcp lets an assistant look up the same tree, pest, licence, city rule and market data while it answers you.
Do I need an account to use the MCP server?
No. It is read-only and needs no key. Add the address to your MCP client, and the assistant can call the tools. Your client may ask you to approve each tool call.
Is there an OpenAPI file?
Yes. https://lirevon.com/api/v1/openapi.json describes every endpoint in OpenAPI 3.1, so you can load it into most API tools or code generators.
I found a mistake in the data. What should I do?
Email hello@lirevon.com with the file, the field and what you think is right, ideally with a source. We check it and fix the page and the API together. See our corrections page for how we handle errors.
Run a tree company?
This data is a side project. Our day job is making sure tree companies never miss a job from a missed call. Get a free audit, see the services or check the pricing.
