Tree care in New York

New York has a humid continental climate with warm summers and cold, snowy winters. It is milder and more humid around New York City and Long Island. Forests of maples, oaks and pines cover much of upstate, and city streets rely on tough street trees.

Storm season

Thunderstorms and the remains of tropical storms are most common from June to October. Nor'easters, heavy wet snow and ice can load up limbs from November to March.

Main storm months: June to October for thunderstorms and tropical remnants; November to March for nor'easters, snow and ice

After a storm, stay away from downed lines and call the utility. Call 911 if anyone is in danger. Read what to do after a storm and our storm guides.

When to prune

Late winter, while trees are dormant, is a good time for most pruning, and dead or storm-damaged limbs can come out at any time. Maples bleed sap in early spring, which is mostly harmless.

Each species page lists its own best and worst times. See the month-by-month tree care calendar and when to prune.

Tree permits

New York City and many other cities, towns and villages protect street trees or require a permit for some removals. Check with your local government before work starts. This is a short explanation, not legal advice.

New York tree care questions

What is the best time to prune trees in New York?

Late winter is a good choice for most trees because they are dormant. Dead, broken or hazardous limbs should be dealt with right away.

Do I need a permit to remove a tree in New York?

Often not on private land in small towns, but New York City and many other places have tree rules. Call your local office first. This is not legal advice.

What should I do about dead ash trees?

Dead ash trees get brittle and can fail without warning. Have a qualified, insured crew look at them before anyone climbs or cuts.

How do I protect trees from heavy snow and ice?

Healthy structure helps most. An arborist can remove weak or crossing limbs. Do not shake or climb an ice-loaded tree.

Which pests should I ask my arborist about?

Ask about emerald ash borer, hemlock woolly adelgid and spotted lanternfly, and check your state's official map. Your local extension office can tell you what is nearby.
