Signs to look for

Tick what you see. More ticks make it more likely, but only an on-site look can confirm.

Season

Adult beetles come out in late spring to summer. Larvae feed under the bark through the growing season and later. Dieback often shows up one to two years after the damage starts.

How it spreads

Adult beetles fly to nearby birch trees, especially ones that are stressed from drought, heat, root damage or poor planting sites. Larvae tunnel under the bark and cut off the tree's water and food flow.

Where it is found

Bronze birch borer is a native insect that extension services report across the birch range in the US and Canada. Check your state official map; ranges change.

What to do

  1. 1

Call an arborist early. Treatment works best before the tree has lost much of its crown.

  2. 2

Water deeply during dry spells and keep a layer of mulch (not against the trunk) to reduce stress.

  3. 3

Prune out dead and damaged branches in winter, before beetles fly in spring. Take the wood away from the site.

  4. 4

Ask a licensed pro about a trunk spray or a systemic treatment timed to the beetle's season. Product choice and timing matter, so follow the label and local advice.

  5. 5

If most of the crown is dead, plan to remove the tree safely. Dead birch can drop limbs.

Safety first: do not climb, do not cut near power lines and do not use a chainsaw on storm-loaded wood. Call the utility for downed lines and 911 if anyone is in danger.

Prevention

Plant birch where it has cool roots and enough water, or choose a more resistant species such as river birch for hot, dry sites. Mulch, water in drought and avoid wounding the trunk or roots. Do not top or over-prune birch.

When to call a pro

Call a licensed arborist as soon as you see thinning at the top of a birch, D-shaped exit holes or bumpy bark. Early treatment can save a valuable tree, and a dead tree near a house or driveway needs a safe removal plan.

How to explain bronze birch borer to a customer

Be honest about what you can save. Tell the owner that treatment works best early, that site stress is usually part of the cause, and that a mostly dead crown is a removal. Offer an inspection and a clear yes or no, without scare tactics.

Send this page to the customer after your visit so they can read the signs in plain words. See also selling plant health care and the job photo checklist.

Questions

What kills birch trees from the top down?

Bronze birch borer is a common cause, especially in birch that is stressed by heat, drought or a poor site. A pro can confirm by looking at the bark.

What are D-shaped holes in birch bark?

They are exit holes made by adult bronze birch borers as they leave the tree.

Can a birch recover from borers?

If caught early, a tree may be saved with watering, pruning and a pro-applied treatment. When most of the crown is dead, recovery is unlikely.

Which birch is least affected?

Extension services note that river birch and some other types are less often hit than paper birch. No birch is immune, so site care matters.

When should I prune a birch?

Prune dead and damaged branches in winter, before the beetles are active in spring. Avoid pruning when the beetles are flying.

Is a dead birch dangerous?

It can be. Dead branches drop without warning, so keep people and cars away and ask a pro about removal.

Can Lirevon diagnose bronze birch borer on my tree?

No. Lirevon is a remote marketing team for tree service companies and does not do tree work. This page is general information, not a diagnosis. A certified arborist or your county extension office can confirm what is wrong with your tree.

How do I find a good local pro for this?

Search Google Maps for certified arborists or tree services near you, read their reviews and ask for proof of insurance. Get two or three written quotes. Our guide on how to hire a tree service lists the questions to ask.
