Season
Adult beetles are active in the warm months and can produce several generations in a year in warm climates. Attacks often follow drought, storm damage or fresh cutting.
How it spreads
Beetles fly to stressed pines and fresh slash, such as pine tops and limbs left on the ground. A large beetle population can then move on to nearby healthy pines.
Where it is found
Ips engraver beetles are native insects found in pine forests across much of the United States. Check your state official map; ranges change.

What to do
- 1
Call a certified arborist or your state forestry office to confirm that it is Ips and not another cause such as root disease or lightning.
- 2
Remove dead and dying pines quickly. Beetles can leave a dead tree and attack the next one.
- 3
Chip, burn where legal, or dry out slash and cut pine so it cannot feed the next beetle generation.
- 4
Water healthy pines deeply during drought.
- 5
Do not spray a tree that is already dead. Treatment only makes sense, if at all, on high-value healthy trees before attack, and label rules apply.
Safety first: do not climb, do not cut near power lines and do not use a chainsaw on storm-loaded wood. Call the utility for downed lines and 911 if anyone is in danger.
Prevention
Keep pines healthy. Water in drought, protect roots during construction, and avoid wounding the trunk. When you cut pines, remove or chip the slash right away instead of piling it near living pines. Extension sources note that cutting pines during drought can raise the risk.
When to call a pro
Call a pro if more than one pine is fading, if a dying pine is near a home or power line, or if you are planning a pine cutting job and want to avoid feeding beetles with slash.

How to explain Ips engraver beetles to a customer
When you cut pines, tell the owner that the slash can feed beetles and that you will chip or haul it. Explain honestly that a dying pine is often a sign of an earlier stress, such as drought or root damage. Avoid scare talk: quick cleanup and watering are the main tools.

Questions
Are Ips beetles the same as the southern pine beetle?
No. They are different bark beetles, though the damage can look alike. An arborist or forestry office can tell them apart by the tunnel pattern under the bark.
Why did my pines die after we cut some trees?
Fresh pine slash gives off a smell that attracts Ips beetles. If cut limbs and tops stay on the ground, beetles can breed in them and move to nearby pines.
Can I save a pine that is turning red?
Usually not once the crown has changed color. The main work is to protect your other pines and clean up the dead tree and slash.
Does watering really help?
Yes. Extension sources list drought stress as a main trigger, and deep watering of valuable pines in dry spells is a basic way to lower risk.
Is it safe to burn the firewood from an infested pine?
Wood is generally fine to burn once it is dry or processed. Keep fresh bark-on logs away from live pines, and check local burning and firewood rules.
Should I treat all my pines with a spray?
Not as a routine. Sprays are a limited, preventive tool for high-value trees, and they do not cure an attacked tree. A licensed applicator can explain the options and the label rules.
Can Lirevon diagnose Ips engraver beetles on my tree?
No. Lirevon is a remote marketing team for tree service companies and does not do tree work. This page is general information, not a diagnosis. A certified arborist or your county extension office can confirm what is wrong with your tree.
How do I find a good local pro for this?
Search Google Maps for certified arborists or tree services near you, read their reviews and ask for proof of insurance. Get two or three written quotes. Our guide on how to hire a tree service lists the questions to ask.
