Tree work license

No state tree license found

We did not find a Delaware state license for tree trimming, removal or arborist work. The Delaware Department of Agriculture's urban forestry page advises hiring an ISA certified arborist and says tree work should only be done by people who are properly insured, trained and equipped, but it does not mention a state license. We could not confirm a state-level license; check with the state and your city.

Pesticide and plant health care

Anyone applying pesticides, restricted use or general use, to someone else's property for pay must be certified and hold a Pesticide Business License from the Delaware Department of Agriculture. Business license categories include Ornamental and Turf Pest Control (ornamental trees, shrubs, flowers and turf) and Forest Pest Control. An older department summary lists liability insurance of at least $300,000 bodily injury per occurrence and $100,000 property damage per occurrence, and says the license expires December 31 or when the insurance expires. That summary is dated, so confirm current amounts with the department.

Contractor license

The Delaware Division of Revenue says any contractor doing business in Delaware must register and get a business license. Resident and non-resident contractors each have their own application package. Check with the Division of Revenue whether your tree work counts as contracting and what fees apply.

Local permits and tree rules

Towns and counties may require their own business licenses, permits for trees in public areas, or tree protection rules, so check with each town before you work there.

Check with the city or county where each job is. Homeowners often ask about this too; you can send them our plain guide to tree permits.

Insurance basics

The pesticide business license needs proof of liability insurance, and clients often ask for general liability and workers' compensation proof; talk to a licensed insurance agent about what fits your company.

General information, not insurance advice. Talk with a licensed agent who knows tree work. More in insurance for tree services, or rough your cost with the workers comp estimator.
