Tree work license

No state tree license found

We could not find a Kentucky state license for tree trimming, removal or arborist work. Kentucky's Department of Housing, Buildings and Construction lists the trades it licenses (plumbers, electricians, boiler, sprinkler and fire alarm contractors), and tree work is not among them. Check with the state and your city before you start.

Pesticide and plant health care

Kentucky regulation 302 KAR 26:020 says a pesticide operator or applicator may not apply any pesticide unless they are certified and licensed in a matching category, except a registered trainee under direct supervision. Certification is by exam (a passing score of 70 percent) in each category, and Category 3 is "Ornamental, turf and lawn care." The Kentucky Department of Agriculture runs the program.

Contractor license

Kentucky's Department of Housing, Buildings and Construction licenses specific trades such as plumbers, electricians, boiler contractors and sprinkler and fire alarm contractors. We did not find a statewide general contractor license that covers tree work. Cities and counties may require their own contractor or business license.

Local permits and tree rules

Cities and counties may require a business license, occupational license or a permit for work in the public right-of-way, and some have tree rules, so check with each local government where you work.

Check with the city or county where each job is. Homeowners often ask about this too; you can send them our plain guide to tree permits.

Insurance basics

Customers, property managers and cities often ask for a certificate of liability insurance, and workers' compensation rules depend on your payroll and setup; talk to a licensed insurance agent about what fits your company.

General information, not insurance advice. Talk with a licensed agent who knows tree work. More in insurance for tree services, or rough your cost with the workers comp estimator.
