Tree service license in Wisconsin

No state tree license found

We found no Wisconsin state license made just for cutting, trimming or removing trees. Treating trees with pesticides for hire needs category certification, an individual commercial applicator license and a pesticide business license from the state Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP). Arborists who resell more than $250 of nursery stock a year also need a nursery dealer license. Short explanation, not legal advice.

Tree work license

No state tree license found

On the official state pages we checked (DATCP pesticide and nursery licensing, and the Department of Safety and Professional Services dwelling contractor credential), we found no state license made just for tree cutting, trimming or removal. We could not confirm a state-level tree license; check with the state and your city before you start work.

Pesticide and plant health care

DATCP says that to apply pesticides commercially in Wisconsin you need three things: certification in a specific category, an Individual Commercial Applicators License, and to work for or own a licensed pesticide business. For-hire applicators must be employed at a licensed business, a business license is needed for each location, and licenses expire December 31. Certification is good for five years.

Contractor license

We found no general state contractor license that covers tree work. The state Dwelling Contractor credential is needed to get a building permit for a one- or two-family home, which most tree jobs do not involve. Separately, DATCP says any arborist or landscaper who bills clients for more than $250 of nursery stock (such as trees they buy and plant) a year needs a Nursery Dealer License; planting trees the client bought directly does not count.

Local permits and tree rules

Many Wisconsin cities have their own tree ordinances and permits for work on street trees, so check with the local government where each job is.

Check with the city or county where each job is. Homeowners often ask about this too; you can send them our plain guide to tree permits.

Insurance basics

General liability and workers' comp are the usual starting points for a tree company, and customers often ask for a certificate of insurance; talk with a licensed insurance agent about what fits your work. This is general information, not insurance advice.

General information, not insurance advice. Talk with a licensed agent who knows tree work. More in insurance for tree services, or rough your cost with the workers comp estimator.
