For homeowners
Can I trim a hedge that is close to my house?
Short answer
Yes, most homeowners can trim a low hedge by hand, as long as it is away from power lines and you can reach it from the ground. Keep a gap between the hedge and the wall so moisture and pests do not build up. Trim lightly and often.

The longer answer
A hedge that touches siding can trap moisture and give insects an easy way onto your house. Aim to keep a gap between the hedge and the wall and keep it clear of gutters and the roof edge.
Use sharp hand shears or a hedge trimmer, and wear eye protection and gloves. Trim so the base is slightly wider than the top. That lets light reach the lower branches, so the hedge stays full at the bottom.
Check overhead first. Never trim near power lines. If wires pass through or over the hedge, stay back and call a pro or your utility. Do not use a ladder with a power tool. For a tall hedge, hire an insured tree service.
