For homeowners
Do I need a written contract for tree work?
Short answer
A written quote or contract is strongly recommended. It should name the work, what happens to the wood and stump, cleanup, the price, how and when you pay, and the start date. It protects you and the company if there is a disagreement later.

The longer answer
You may be tempted to shake hands and trust a friendly voice. For small jobs, a clear written quote may be enough. For bigger jobs, a short contract is better. Either way, get it in writing.
A good document answers the main questions. Who is the company, with its name and phone number? Which tree or trees, and what exactly will be done? Will the stump be ground? What will happen to logs, branches, and chips? Will cleanup be done? What is the price, and what is the payment plan? When will the work start, and what happens if weather delays it? Does it mention insurance?
If the crew finds a surprise, such as rot or a hidden wire, the price might change. Ask how extra work will be handled and ask that no extra work is done without your approval.
Read before you sign, and do not sign anything you do not understand. Keep a copy, and keep your photos and receipts.
If a company refuses to put the details in writing, that is a signal to look elsewhere. Some cities and states have rules about home-improvement contracts or a right to cancel, so check locally.
This is a short explanation, not legal advice.
