For tree service owners

What is a tailgate safety meeting for a tree crew?

Short answer

A tailgate safety meeting is a short talk before work starts, held at the job site, where the crew goes over the plan, hazards, roles, equipment and emergency steps. It takes a few minutes and helps prevent accidents. Write down the date, topic and who attended.

The longer answer

The name comes from crews gathering at the back of the truck. The idea is simple: before the saw starts, everyone knows what the job is, who does what and what could go wrong.

A good meeting covers the work plan and each person's role, the hazards on site, such as power lines, traffic, slopes, weak limbs or nearby buildings, the drop zones and the gear to be used, and what to do in an emergency, including the address and who calls for help.

Keep it short and practical. Five minutes is often enough. Ask each person if they see a problem. A crew that feels free to speak up catches mistakes early.

Write it down. A simple sheet with the date, the site, the topic and the names of the crew helps you spot patterns, and it shows customers and insurers you take safety seriously. Do not claim a record you did not keep.

Learn the safety rules that apply to your work. Industry safety standards and government rules cover tree care, and your insurance company may have advice too. Check what applies to you.
