1. The job

2. Equipment

Hours each machine works on this job and what it costs you per hour (owned or rented). The rates below are starting points only, change them.

3. Fees, travel and margin

How the math works

  1. Labor = crew size × (hours on site + travel hours) × loaded cost per person per hour.
  2. Equipment = for each row, hours × cost per hour, added up.
  3. Direct cost = labor + equipment + disposal + fuel + permit.
  4. Break-even price = direct cost + (direct cost × overhead %).
  5. Suggested price = break-even ÷ (1 − target margin). This keeps your margin as a share of the price.
  6. Price per crew-hour = suggested price ÷ (hours on site + travel hours). One crew-hour is one hour of the whole crew.

Questions about pricing tree jobs

How do I price a tree removal job?

Add up what the job costs you: crew hours times loaded labor cost, equipment hours times each machine's hourly cost, dump or disposal fees, travel and fuel, and any permit. Add your overhead share. That is break-even. Then divide by one minus your target margin to get the price. This tool does those steps for you with your own numbers.

What is a loaded crew cost per hour?

It is the hourly wage plus everything that comes with it: payroll taxes, workers' comp, paid time off and other benefits. It is almost always well above the wage. Use our crew day rate calculator to work out your own number.

Should I charge for travel time?

Your crew is paid while driving, so the cost is real. You can show it as a line on the quote or build it into the price. This tool adds travel hours to labor and adds fuel as its own line, so the cost is covered either way.

How do I work out an hourly cost for equipment I own?

Take the machine's yearly cost (loan or depreciation, insurance, maintenance) and divide by the hours it works in a year. If a chipper costs you $8,000 a year and runs 400 hours, that is $20 an hour before fuel. Our equipment buy vs rent tool helps with the yearly cost.

What overhead percent should I use?

Use your own books. Add up last year's costs that are not tied to one job (office, phones, software, insurance not already in the crew rate, your own salary if you do not work on crews) and divide by last year's direct job costs. That gives you an overhead percent to apply to each job.

What is the difference between margin and markup here?

Margin is profit as a share of the price. Markup is profit as a share of cost. This tool uses margin. A 20% margin means 20 cents of every dollar you charge is profit. The same job needs a 25% markup to get there.

Is the suggested price a quote I can send?

No. It is an estimate built from the numbers you typed. Check it against the site: access, drop zone, hazards, power lines and what the customer wants hauled away. Then write your quote.

How much should I charge to remove a tree?

There is no single price. It depends on the size of the tree, access, hazards, how much hauling the customer wants and your own costs. Build your number from your costs here, then compare it to what you quote in your area. Get a written quote, not a guess.

What profit margin should a tree service aim for?

Use your own books and goals. Pick a margin that still pays for slow weeks, repairs and your own time, not just the cost of one job. Try a few margins in this tool and see how the suggested price changes.

Is anything I type sent to Lirevon?

No. The math runs in your browser. Your numbers are only kept in this browser on this device so the form is filled in next time. Clear your browser data to remove them.
