What is Job costing?

Short answer

Job costing is tracking all the labor, equipment, fuel, disposal and other costs of one job to see if you made money.

Job costing, explained for tree service owners

After a removal, add up crew hours, truck time, fuel, dump fees and any rented gear, and compare the total with what the customer paid. This shows which job types are worth doing and which ones lose money. Without it, owners rely on feelings. Start simple with a notebook or a spreadsheet and fill it in the same day. After a dozen jobs you will see patterns that help you price better and say no to bad work with confidence.
