Tree permits · Texas

Do you need a tree removal permit in Dallas, TX?

Protected trees

Trees 8 inches in diameter and greater are protected. Trees are classed by species and location (historic, significant, class 1 to 3) for mitigation.

Street trees

Trees planted in the right-of-way are city property and need city permission before removal; a tree removal permit is required for healthy, protected trees in the right-of-way, with mitigation. The adjacent owner is responsible for removing and maintaining parkway trees, must remove dead, diseased or damaged parkway trees at their own expense (Sec. 48-11), and must keep 15 feet clear above the street or alley and 8 feet above the sidewalk.

Dead or hazardous trees

Homeowners must remove dead trees and limbs that could reasonably injure a person (Sec. 27-11), and dead, diseased or damaged trees in the abutting parkway (Sec. 48-11).

How to apply

Submit a Building Inspection application, tree survey and mitigation plan to the city arborist office (Development Services Department). The city lists a $100 minimum fee or 0.0095 times the cost of the tree removal. A permit is issued only when the removal is found to be in the public interest.

HOA note

HOA rules can be stricter; check yours.

A city permit does not override your HOA. Check your covenants before work starts.

Dallas tree permit questions

Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Dallas, TX?

For some trees. Dallas requires a permit for certain trees or certain sites, not every tree. Dallas protects trees 8 inches in diameter and larger under Article X, and removing a protected tree usually needs a tree removal permit plus mitigation (replacement). Lots under two acres that have a single-family or duplex use are excepted, so most home yards do not need a permit. Vacant lots, lots of two acres or more, lots with a building being demolished, and trees in the parkway or alley are not excepted. Our confidence: medium. Short explanation, not legal advice.
