Oak wilt: signs and what to do
Oak wilt is a tree disease, often seen on red oaks, live oaks, white oaks. Look for: leaves that turn dull green, bronze or brown from the tips and edges inward and then drop early.
General information, not a diagnosis. A certified arborist or your county extension office can confirm.
- Disease
- Red oaks (such as northern red, pin, Shumard, water, willow)
- Live oaks
- White oaks (more resistant)

Season
Spring and early summer are the high-risk times for new infections, when sap beetles are active and fresh wounds attract them. Symptoms often show from late spring through summer.
How it spreads
The fungus spreads two ways. Through the roots, when neighboring oaks have grafted roots. And above ground, when sap-feeding beetles carry spores from fungal mats to fresh wounds on healthy oaks.
Where it is found
Oak wilt is found in parts of the eastern and midwestern United States and in Texas. Check your state official map; ranges change.
Official sources
What to do
- 1
Do not prune or wound oaks during the high-risk season set by your state or extension office. Many sources advise avoiding spring and early summer.
- 2
If you must wound an oak (storm damage, construction), cover the fresh wound right away as your extension service advises.
- 3
Photograph the leaves and the crown, then contact your county extension office or state forestry agency to ask about lab testing.
- 4
Ask a certified arborist about stopping root spread between oaks, which is done by severing the root connections in the soil.
- 5
Do not move firewood or logs from oaks that died of unknown or suspected oak wilt.
- 6
Follow your extension office's advice on handling wood from infected red oaks.
Safety first: do not climb, do not cut near power lines and do not use a chainsaw on storm-loaded wood. Call the utility for downed lines and 911 if anyone is in danger.
Prevention
Avoid wounding oaks during the high-risk season. Protect trees during building work so roots and trunks are not damaged. Plant a variety of species. Buy and burn firewood locally. Your state forestry agency can tell you the safest pruning window for your area.
When to call a pro
Call a certified arborist if oaks are dropping leaves in summer, if red oaks are dying fast, or before any work on oaks during the sensitive season. Root-barrier work and safe wood handling need trained crews and local guidance.

For tree companies
How to explain oak wilt to a customer
Tell homeowners plainly that timing matters and that the pruning window differs by area. Explain what you can see, suggest lab confirmation, and do not promise to save every tree. Many owners trust a company that says no to unnecessary summer pruning and explains why.
Send this page to the customer after your visit so they can read the signs in plain words. See also selling plant health care and the job photo checklist.
Questions
What is oak wilt?
Oak wilt is a fungal disease that blocks the water-carrying tissue of oaks. It can kill red oaks and live oaks quickly. White oaks are usually more resistant.
Which oaks are most at risk?
Red oaks are the most likely to die fast. Live oaks can also be killed, often through the roots. White oaks tend to be more resistant, but they can still be affected.
When is it safe to prune oaks?
It depends on where you live. Many extension services say to avoid pruning in spring and early summer. Ask your state forestry agency or extension office for your local safe window.
Can oak wilt be treated?
Some cases can be slowed. Root disruption and fungicide injections by a qualified arborist may help in some situations, but they do not work on every tree. Ask a pro about your tree.
Can I use the wood from an oak that died of oak wilt?
Follow your extension office's advice. Moving infected wood can spread the problem. Local guidance on how long to hold or how to handle the wood can differ.
Can oak wilt spread to my neighbor's trees?
Yes. It can move through connected roots between oaks, and sap beetles can carry it to fresh wounds. That is why early action matters.
Can Lirevon diagnose oak wilt on my tree?
No. Lirevon is a remote marketing team for tree service companies and does not do tree work. This page is general information, not a diagnosis. A certified arborist or your county extension office can confirm what is wrong with your tree.
How do I find a good local pro for this?
Search Google Maps for certified arborists or tree services near you, read their reviews and ask for proof of insurance. Get two or three written quotes. Our guide on how to hire a tree service lists the questions to ask.
