Quick facts about shumard oak
Height 50-80 ft
Spread 40-50 ft
Growth rate Medium
USDA zones 5-9
Lifespan typically 100-200 years
Type Deciduous
Native range Southeastern and south-central United States, from the Gulf Coast north to Missouri and Virginia, often on river bottoms and moist uplands.
Roots Deep, spreading root system. More tolerant of alkaline soils and dry spells than pin oak, but still sensitive to compaction, trenching and fill soil.
Wood Hard, heavy red-oak-group wood. Good firewood after a year or more of seasoning.
Storm risk mediumStrong wood and a good form, but large old trees can shed limbs and may have decay inside. Saturated soil adds risk in high wind.

Typical ranges, not guarantees. Soil, water, space and care change how a tree grows. Storm risk is our general rating for the species, not an inspection.

For homeowners

Caring for a shumard oak

Best time to prune

Late fall through winter while dormant. Train a single strong leader on young trees.

Avoid pruning

Avoid spring through mid-summer pruning where oak wilt is present. Do not top or leave large flush cuts.

More on timing: when to prune trees.

  • Give it plenty of space; it gets large with a broad crown.
  • Mulch the root zone but keep mulch off the trunk.
  • Strong red fall color is common, though it varies with weather.
  • If leaves wilt and fall in summer, call a certified arborist right away; oak wilt can move fast in red oaks.

Safety first

Do not climb a tree or use a chainsaw on storm-loaded or broken wood. If a tree or limb is touching power lines, stay away and call the utility. If someone is in danger, call 911. For anything big, hire a local insured pro: read how to hire a tree service and is my tree dangerous?

Field notes: working on shumard oak

  • 1Red oak group: oak wilt can kill a tree within weeks in some cases, so ask about timing and symptoms.
  • 2Follow local guidance before moving fresh oak wood out of an oak wilt area.
  • 3Check for hollows at old pruning wounds.
  • 4Clean tools between trees when oak wilt is suspected.

Removal notes

Big trees usually need climbing or a crane with careful rigging, especially near buildings. Check for oak wilt signs before moving wood. Get a quote.

Wood

Hard, heavy red-oak-group wood. Good firewood after a year or more of seasoning.

Shumard Oak: common questions

Is Shumard oak a good shade tree?

Yes. It grows at a medium rate, forms a broad crown and often has strong red fall color. It needs a large space.

How is it different from northern red oak?

They look alike. Shumard oak has deeper, more pointed lobes and is more at home in the South and in drier soils. A certified arborist can confirm which you have.

Does it get oak wilt?

Yes. It is in the red oak group and can be killed by oak wilt. Check with your state extension service about local risk.

Why are the leaves yellow with green veins?

That is typically iron chlorosis, common in high-pH soil. An arborist or soil test can help find the cause.

Is it better than pin oak in alkaline soil?

Generally yes. Shumard oak tolerates higher soil pH better than pin oak, though extreme conditions can still cause trouble.

When should I prune it?

Typically in late fall through winter. Avoid spring and summer cuts in oak wilt areas.
