Do I need a state license to do tree work in California? +
California requires a state license for at least some tree work. CSLB's C-49 Tree and Palm classification covers planting, maintaining and removing trees and palms, including pruning, stump grinding and guying. Since January 1, 2024, CSLB no longer accepts applications for the old C-61/D-49 Tree Service classification; those are processed as C-49 applications, and every C-49 applicant must pass a trade exam. Contractors who held a C-61/D-49 issued before January 1, 2024 may keep working under it. The classification notes that incidental pruning by a nurseryperson or a gardener under Business and Professions Code section 7026.1 does not need this license. Checked 25 October 2026.
