Tree service marketing in California

We checked 187 tree companies across 5 California metros in October 2026. Most of them lose jobs the same three ways: the call rings out, the lead waits, the review never gets asked for. Here is what the market looks like and what we install to fix it.

What we found in California

91% cannot be texted from the website

Of the 129 California sites we could load, 91% have no text or chat option. A homeowner who is up a ladder with a cracked limb over the roof wants to text, not fill a form and wait.

94% have no online booking

Almost nobody in the state lets a homeowner pick an estimate slot. The owner who does gets the job while the others are still playing phone tag.

13% have no website at all

13% of California tree companies run on a Google listing and a phone number alone. A 5-page site that loads in 2 seconds puts you ahead of them.

38 reviews is the middle of the pack

Half of California tree companies have fewer than 38 Google reviews. Asking after every job, by text, is how you pass them.

Local conditions

Working in California

Mediterranean along the coast and in the valleys, with dry summers and mild, wetter winters; colder with heavy snow in the Sierra Nevada and hotter and drier in the inland deserts.

Storm days are when the phone rings most and gets answered least. The system is built for that day.

Storms
Wildfire in the dry months, strong Santa Ana and other offshore winds, winter storms and atmospheric rivers that soak the ground, and long droughts that weaken trees.Season: June to November for wildfire and wind; November to March for winter storms
Trees
Coast live oaks, valley oaks, redwoods, eucalyptus, Monterey pines and cypresses, ponderosa and other pines in the mountains, and many palms in the south.
The work
Fire-clearance and defensible-space work before the dry season, storm cleanup after winter storms and wind events, and removals of drought-stressed and dead trees all year.
Rules
Some California cities and counties may protect certain trees such as native oaks, and fire-safety rules may apply near homes; check the local ordinance before quoting.

Licenses and permits

Rules for tree companies in California

State license required

California requires a state license for at least some tree work.

Short explanation, not legal advice. Rules change, so check with the state and your city before you quote (we last checked on 2026-10-25).

Tree work
CSLB's C-49 Tree and Palm classification covers planting, maintaining and removing trees and palms, including pruning, stump grinding and guying.
Pesticides
The California Department of Pesticide Regulation (DPR) licenses businesses that apply pesticides or use pest control methods for hire.
Contractor
Since January 1, 2025, California's minor work exemption is $1,000, but only if the work needs no permit of any kind and the unlicensed person hires no workers.
City and county
Many California cities and counties have tree ordinances, protected or heritage tree rules and removal permits, so check with the city or county planning office before any removal.

On the job

Trees and storms your crews work on in California

Storms

Wildfire in the dry months, strong Santa Ana and other offshore winds, winter storms and atmospheric rivers that soak the ground, and long droughts that weaken trees.

When: June to November for wildfire and wind; November to March for winter storms

Storm days bring the most calls and the most missed calls. Plan for them with the storm capacity planner and the storm guides.

Busy seasons in California

When the phone rings

Fire-clearance and defensible-space work before the dry season, storm cleanup after winter storms and wind events, and removals of drought-stressed and dead trees all year.

Pruning timing

Many trees are pruned in the cooler months, but native oaks have special timing guidance, so ask an arborist before cutting them. Fire-clearance work is usually done before the dry season starts.

Plan your year with the seasonal demand calendar and the month-by-month tree work calendar.

Questions from California owners

Do you have an office in California?

No. We are a remote team that works US hours; your customers only ever deal with your own number and name. Texts go out from your business number, the booking page carries your name, and you own every account we set up.

How many California tree companies do you take?

One per metro. If you are the first in San Jose to sign, nobody else in that metro gets the system from us while you are a client.

Where do these numbers come from?

From Google Maps listings for the searches "tree service" and "tree removal" in California, pulled in October 2026 (latest pull 26 October 2026), cleaned, and then checked by our own script for a text or chat option and online booking on the home page. They are estimates about the market, not claims about any one company.

What does it cost?

Founding clients: $297 setup and $497 a month for the Core system, no long contract. The full breakdown is on the pricing page.

Do tree companies need a license in California?

California requires a state license for at least some tree work. Pesticide, contractor and city rules can also apply. The full rules, with links to the official sources, are on our California tree service license page. Short explanation, not legal advice.

When is storm season for tree work in California?

Wildfire in the dry months, strong Santa Ana and other offshore winds, winter storms and atmospheric rivers that soak the ground, and long droughts that weaken trees. The main months are June to November for wildfire and wind; November to March for winter storms. Those are the days your phone rings most, so missed-call text-back and a clear booking page matter most then.

When are California tree crews busiest?

Fire-clearance and defensible-space work before the dry season, storm cleanup after winter storms and wind events, and removals of drought-stressed and dead trees all year. Plan your marketing and your answering cover a few weeks before each busy stretch starts.

Do you do tree work or send us leads?

No. Lirevon does not do tree work and does not sell or share leads. We install a system on your own number and accounts so you answer, book and follow up on the calls you already get, and ask every customer for a review.
