Pesticide and plant health care

Clemson's Department of Pesticide Regulation says you are a commercial applicator and must be licensed if you apply pesticides in categories such as Category 3 to another person's property for pay. Category 3, Ornamental and Turf Pest Control, covers pest control on ornamental trees, shrubs, flowers and turf, and licensing is mandatory in it.

Contractor license

South Carolina's Contractor's Licensing Board licenses general contracting when the total cost of construction is more than $10,000. We did not see tree work or landscaping named in the law, so we could not confirm whether a tree job would count. Ask the board at the Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation.

Local permits and tree rules

South Carolina cities and counties can require a business license and permits for tree removal under local tree ordinances, so check with the city or county before the job.

Check with the city or county where each job is. Homeowners often ask about this too; you can send them our plain guide to tree permits.

Insurance basics

We found no state tree-work insurance rule, but customers and cities often ask for proof of liability and workers' comp coverage. Talk to a licensed insurance agent about what fits your company.

General information, not insurance advice. Talk with a licensed agent who knows tree work. More in insurance for tree services, or rough your cost with the workers comp estimator.
