Tree work license

No state tree license found

We could not find a state-level tree service or arborist license in South Dakota. A TCI Magazine overview of state tree-care licensing names only a few states with tree licenses (such as California, New Jersey and Maryland), and South Dakota is not one of them. That article is not a full list. We could not confirm a state-level license; check with the state and your city.

Pesticide and plant health care

South Dakota Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources (DANR) says anyone who applies pesticides for hire needs a commercial pesticide applicator license. You pass the core General (G) exam plus the category exams for your type of work. The license lasts two years and is renewed by the last day of February in the year it expires.

Contractor license

We found no state general contractor license for tree work. The South Dakota Department of Revenue's July 2026 Contractor's Excise Tax Guide lists ornamental shrub and tree planting, trimming and removal (including stump removal and grinding), pruning and utility line tree trimming as services subject to sales tax, so a tree company would normally need a sales tax license. A separate contractor's excise tax license is required for construction services and work that builds, installs or repairs fixtures to real property. The same guide lists brush or timber clearing and stump removal in fields as subject to contractor's excise tax instead. Ask the Department of Revenue which applies to your jobs.

Local permits and tree rules

Cities and counties can have their own contractor licenses, business licenses, right-of-way permits and tree rules, so check with your city or county before you start work.

Check with the city or county where each job is. Homeowners often ask about this too; you can send them our plain guide to tree permits.

Insurance basics

Most homeowners, property managers and cities ask for proof of general liability insurance, and workers' compensation rules depend on the state and your crew; talk to a licensed insurance agent. This is general information, not advice.

General information, not insurance advice. Talk with a licensed agent who knows tree work. More in insurance for tree services, or rough your cost with the workers comp estimator.
