For homeowners
Can I prune my tree in the summer?
Short answer
Yes, light summer pruning is fine for most trees. Stick to dead, broken or crossing branches, or small shaping cuts. Save heavy pruning for the dormant season. Some trees, such as oaks, can be at risk of disease if cut at the wrong time, so check local guidance.

The longer answer
In summer a tree is actively growing and using its leaves to make food, so heavy cuts can stress it. Open wounds in hot, dry weather can also attract pests.
Summer pruning can slow the growth of a vigorous tree and is a good time to remove dead branches, since they are easy to spot. Some flowering trees are best pruned right after they bloom.
Oaks need extra care. In many regions, cuts made during the growing season can let insects spread a deadly disease called oak wilt. Ask your state forestry office or local extension office for the safe pruning window where you live.
Storm-broken or hanging limbs can come off at any time of year, but have a pro handle anything large, high or near wires.
