For homeowners
Can I remove a tree near my pool?
Short answer
Yes, but hire a trained, insured crew. A tree near a pool needs a careful plan so that limbs do not fall into the water or hit the deck and equipment. Also ask your city whether a permit is needed. Do not do this work yourself.

The longer answer
Pools add risk to a removal. Heavy pieces can crack a deck, tear a cover or damage the pool shell and pump. A good crew plans where each piece will go before the first cut. They may lower pieces on ropes, work in small sections, or use a crane to lift them over the pool.
Before the job, talk about what is at stake. Ask how they will protect the pool and the area around it, who pays if something is damaged, and what happens to the stump and roots. Ask for a certificate of insurance and a written quote. Ask what they will do about leaves, twigs and sawdust that get into the water.
Permit rules for trees differ from place to place, and some cities also have pool barrier or safety rules. Call your local building or planning office and ask about both. If a tree is dying and could fall, call a tree company soon and keep people away from the area.
Please do not climb or cut the tree yourself. This is a short explanation, not legal advice.
