Do I need a license to run a tree service?

There is no single national tree service license in the US. Rules are set by states, counties and cities, and they vary a lot. Some states require a license or registration for tree work or for pesticide use. Others have no state-level tree license, but still require a general business license, a contractor registration or a local permit.

Start with your state. Look for the official page of the state agency that handles contractor or business licensing, or ask them directly. If you apply pesticides or treatments, there may be separate rules for that. Then check your county and city, which often require a business license and sometimes rules for work on public land or near utilities.

Insurance and proof matter even where no license exists. Customers and property managers often ask for proof of cover, and some towns require it before they issue a permit.

Certifications are different from licenses. A credential from an industry body shows training, but it is usually not a legal requirement. Do not call yourself licensed unless you are.
