For tree service owners
Do workplace safety rules like OSHA apply to tree service companies?
Short answer
Yes, workplace safety rules apply to tree care work. OSHA enforces federal rules in many states, and some states run their own safety programs. Tree crews also follow industry safety standards. Check your state program and train your crew.

The longer answer
Tree work has well known dangers: falls, falling limbs, chainsaws, chippers and electrical lines. Because of this, workplace safety rules apply to it. In some states the federal agency OSHA enforces them. Other states run their own approved programs.
Industry safety standards also exist for tree care, and they are often used as the bar for what a careful crew does. Our safety guide covers the habits: a briefing before the job, proper protective equipment, and a plan for who calls for help.
If you employ workers, call your state's workplace safety office and ask what applies to you. Keep written records of training and tailgate meetings. Rules differ by state; see /tree-service-license for your state's official sources. This is a short explanation, not legal advice. Check with your state, county and city, and ask your own insurance agent or an attorney about your case.
