For tree service owners
How do I measure a tree for an estimate?
Short answer
Check the height, the trunk size, the crown spread and the space around the tree. You can estimate height from a safe distance using a simple method, and measure the distance around the trunk at chest height. Always add notes about access and hazards.

The longer answer
Measurements help you guess time, rigging and disposal. They do not replace a look at the whole site.
Trunk size: wrap a tape around the trunk at about chest height and write down the reading. Note any bulges, splits or deadwood.
Height: you can use a simple method from a safe distance. Our tree height tool explains how. It gives a rough estimate. For a more exact reading, use a proper measuring tool.
Crown: how wide is the canopy, and which way does it lean? Where will branches and wood land?
Access and targets: write down what is under and next to the tree, such as roofs, lines, fences, pools and gardens. Note where the truck can park and where the chipper can go.
Take photos before you leave. They help you plan, explain the price, and show the condition of the site before work.
Never stand under a tree you suspect is unstable, and stay well away from lines.
