For tree service owners

How do I plan my tree service year by season?

Short answer

Split the year into the busy, steady and slow seasons for your area. Plan hiring and equipment service before the busy time. Plan marketing and training for the slow time. Use your own past records to guess when each season starts.

The longer answer

Every region has its own rhythm, so use your own history first.

Look back at your jobs by month. When did calls rise, and when did they fall? A simple chart on paper is enough. If you are new, ask local friends in the trade, and use our month-by-month calendar as a rough guide.

Before the busy season: service the trucks, chipper and saws, sharpen and replace worn gear, line up extra help, and make sure your phone is answered. Missed calls cost the most when demand is high.

During the busy season: protect your crew from burnout, keep your schedule realistic and follow up on quotes quickly.

In the slow season: do training, deep maintenance, review requests, past-customer outreach and website updates. Plan cash so the slow months do not hurt.

Write your year on one page and look at it each quarter.
