For homeowners
What should I do if a tree root is exposed?
Short answer
If the tree looks healthy, usually leave the root alone. Surface roots are common on older trees and on slopes. Do not cut the root or bury it under thick soil. A thin layer of mulch is a good way to protect it.

The longer answer
Roots show above ground for many reasons: soil washed away, the tree grew on a slope, the root grew along the surface, or grading removed topsoil. Many species naturally have roots near the surface.
Do not cut a large root to tidy up. A big root cut close to the trunk can remove support and leave a wound the tree struggles to close. Do not pile a deep layer of soil over it either, because that can hold moisture against the bark and cut off air to the roots.
To protect the root, spread a thin layer of mulch and keep it a few inches back from the trunk. Keep mowers and string trimmers away from the bark. Repeated damage at the base harms the tree over time. Keep heavy vehicles off the root area.
Have a certified arborist look if a lot of soil has washed away, the tree leans, the root plate looks lifted, or you see soft or damaged wood at the base. On a slope, fixing erosion may matter more than the root itself.
