When is the best time to prune trees?

Short answer

For most trees, the dormant season, late fall through winter, is a good time for routine pruning. Dead or dangerous branches can come off any time of year. Some trees bleed sap or are open to disease in certain months, so ask a local certified arborist about your species.

The longer answer

Pruning in the dormant season is common advice because the tree has no leaves, so the branch structure is easy to see, and many pests and fungi are less active in cold weather. Wounds also close and heal when growth starts in spring.

There are exceptions. Some trees, such as maples and birches, can drip a lot of sap if cut in late winter. This looks bad but is usually not harmful. Oaks can be at risk from certain diseases spread by beetles in warm months, and your state extension service often gives local dates for avoiding oak pruning. Spring-flowering trees such as dogwood and redbud are often pruned right after they bloom so you do not cut off next year's flowers.

Dead, broken or hanging branches are a safety issue. Do not wait for the right season. Call a pro.

Our pruning page and monthly calendar cover more. Dates vary by region and species, so ask a local certified arborist or your county extension office.
