For homeowners
When is the best time to plant a tree?
Short answer
In many parts of the country, fall and early spring are good times because the weather is mild and roots can settle. Avoid planting during extreme heat, frozen ground or drought. Local timing varies, so check with your county extension office.

The longer answer
Trees need time to grow new roots before summer heat or hard winter freezes. Fall planting gives roots months of growth in warm soil while the top rests. Early spring works too, before the tree leafs out.
In hot, dry climates, cooler months are better. In very cold climates, spring may be safer.
Whatever the season, water matters most. A newly planted tree needs regular watering for its first growing seasons. Plant it at the right height, with the root flare at or just above ground level, and avoid piling mulch against the trunk.
Call 811 before you dig. Container and balled trees have different needs, so read the tag or ask the nursery.
