For homeowners
Who is responsible for tree damage to my house?
Short answer
Usually your own homeowners insurance handles damage to your house from a fallen tree, even if the tree came from a neighbor's yard. A neighbor may be responsible if they knew the tree was dead or hazardous and did nothing about it. Rules vary, so check your policy.

The longer answer
When a healthy tree falls in a storm, it is usually treated as an accident that nobody could have prevented. In that case, your own policy normally pays for damage to your home, after your deductible.
Things can be different if a tree was clearly dead, diseased or leaning and the owner had been told about it. In some situations the owner can be held responsible. Whether that applies to you depends on your state and the facts.
Take photos, keep receipts and tell your insurer quickly. Written notes about when you told a neighbor about a hazard can also help.
This is general information, not legal advice or insurance advice. Your own insurance agent can explain your policy.

Safety first: stay away from downed power lines and call the utility; call 911 if anyone is in danger. Lirevon does not do tree work. Find local pros on Google Maps and read their reviews, then get two or three written quotes.
