For homeowners

Will tree roots damage my foundation?

Short answer

Roots seek water and open soil, and they can sometimes lift paving or crack old pipes. Roots usually do not break through a sound foundation, but they can add stress in certain soils. Do not cut large roots yourself. Ask an arborist and, if needed, a structural pro.

The longer answer

Tree roots mostly grow in the top foot or two of soil and spread wide, often far past the branches. They do not usually push through a solid, sound foundation. But roots can pull water out of clay soils, which shrink as they dry, and that can add stress to a house. Roots can also enter cracked sewer or drain pipes looking for water.

Cutting large roots can hurt the tree and make it unstable. Before any root cutting, ask a certified arborist to check how close the roots are and how to protect the tree.

If you see wall cracks, sticking doors or pipe problems, you may need an inspection from a qualified building or plumbing pro too. We cannot tell you the cause from here.

In some cases, removing the tree is the answer. In others, root barriers or care are enough.
