For homeowners
Can a tree be removed if it is too close to my house?
Short answer
Yes. A trained, insured crew can remove a tree right next to a house. There is no fixed safe distance. The crew picks a method, such as taking the tree down in small pieces with ropes or using a crane, based on the tree and the site. Do not try it yourself.

The longer answer
Tight removals are everyday work for a good tree company. The crew looks at the tree's height, lean and health, and at the space around it. They check for your house, fences, pools, buried lines and overhead wires. Then they choose a plan.
There is no single safe distance, so be wary of anyone who gives you one number. A small tree with open space on one side can sometimes be felled in one piece. A large tree close to a roof is usually climbed and taken down in sections, with each piece lowered on ropes. Some jobs need a crane.
Ask the company how they will do the job, how they will protect your roof, lawn and patio, and whether they carry insurance. Ask for a certificate of insurance and a written quote that names the method and the cleanup. If the tree is near power lines, the crew needs the right training, and the utility may need to be involved.
Never cut or climb a tree near your house yourself. A falling limb can cause serious injury and costly damage.
Some cities need a permit before a tree comes down. Call your local planning or building office to check. This is a short explanation, not legal advice.
