Tree service startup cost planner

By Umair Nawaz, founder of Lirevon Updated How we test tools

List what it takes to open your tree service: truck, chipper, saws, climbing gear, insurance, licenses, website and marketing. Every line is your own number. There are no prices filled in. Type the quotes you got, and see your one-time total, your monthly total and how many months your cash lasts.

1. One-time costs

What you pay before the first job. Leave a line blank if it does not apply. If you finance something, type the down payment here and the loan payment in the monthly list.

2. Monthly costs

What you pay every month once you are open. If a bill is yearly, divide it by 12.

3. Cash and runway

How the math works

  1. One-time total = every line in the one-time list, added up.
  2. Monthly total = every line in the monthly list, added up.
  3. Cash left after start = cash you have − one-time total.
  4. Monthly shortfall = monthly total − monthly revenue you expect. If revenue is higher, there is no shortfall.
  5. Months of runway = cash left after start ÷ monthly shortfall, rounded down to one decimal.
  6. Cash needed = one-time total + (months of runway you want × monthly shortfall).

Real months are not all the same. Many areas are slow in winter and busy after storms. For a month-by-month view, use the 12-month cash flow planner.

Questions about startup costs

How much does it cost to start a tree service?

It depends on what you buy, new or used, where you work and what your insurance quote comes back at. Two people starting with a used truck and rented equipment spend far less than a company buying a new bucket truck. That is why this planner has no prices filled in. Get quotes for each line, type them in, and the planner adds them up.

What equipment do I need on day one?

Many new tree services start with a truck that can tow, a chipper or a plan to haul brush, chainsaws, climbing and rigging gear, and personal protective equipment for every person. Many rent the big machines, like stump grinders, lifts and cranes, until they have steady work. Our equipment buy vs rent calculator helps with that choice.

Should I buy or rent a chipper and stump grinder at the start?

Rent while you do not know how many hours a month you will use them. Buying makes sense when the rental bills add up to more than the yearly cost of owning. Type the rental cost into the monthly list here, or the down payment into the one-time list and the loan payment into the monthly list.

What insurance does a new tree service need?

Many tree companies carry general liability, commercial auto for the trucks, and workers comp once they have employees. Many customers and property managers ask for a certificate before you start. Ask an insurance agent who writes policies for tree work for a quote. Short explanation, not legal or insurance advice.

Do I need a license to run a tree service?

Rules are set by your state, county and city, and they differ a lot. Some places need a business license only, some need a tree or arborist license, and pesticide work needs its own license. Check our state license pages and call your city. Short explanation, not legal advice.

How many months of runway should I plan for?

There is no single right number. Tree work is seasonal in many areas and new companies take time to win reviews and repeat customers. Pick a number of months you would feel safe with, type it in, and the planner shows how much cash that needs. Our cash flow planner helps you look at the slow months.

What does "runway" mean in this planner?

Cash left after one-time costs, divided by your monthly shortfall. The monthly shortfall is your monthly costs minus the monthly revenue you expect. If revenue already covers your monthly costs, there is no shortfall, and the planner says so.

Should I pay myself in the first months?

You still have bills at home. Put what you need to live on as an owner pay line in the monthly list. Leaving it out makes the runway look longer than it really is.

How do I get my first customers?

Many new tree services start with a Google Business Profile, a simple website, word of mouth, and answering every call fast. Budget for those in the website and marketing lines. Our guide to starting a tree service walks through the first steps.
