Hiring a tree service in Hawaii
State license required
Hawaii requires a state license for at least some tree work. Ask the company to show it. See the Hawaii state rules page for details and official links.
- Check the state rules page for Hawaii: the state requires a contractor license for larger jobs, and state tree-trimming bids ask for a C-27 or C-27-B license, so ask to see a license number.
- Ask for proof of liability insurance and workers' compensation, and ask who pays if a branch hits a roof, car or power line.
- Ask how the crew will handle steep ground, palm fronds and green waste so debris does not end up in a stream or gulch.
- Get two or three written quotes that list what is included, such as cleanup, hauling and stump work.
- For trees near power lines, call the utility. Do not trim near lines yourself.
Get two or three written quotes. To find local pros, search Google Maps and read their reviews. Full steps in how to hire a tree service and the hiring checklist.
