Canary Island Date Palm: pruning, storm risk and removal
Phoenix canariensis. Also called Pineapple palm, Canary palm.
Plain-English notes for homeowners, plus field notes for tree crews. General guidance only: for one specific tree, have a local insured pro look at it.
Canary Island Date Palm at a glance
| Height | 40-60 ft |
|---|---|
| Spread | 20-30 ft |
| Growth rate | Slow to medium |
| USDA zones | 9-11 |
| Lifespan | Typically 100-200 years in good conditions |
| Type | Palm |
| Native range | The Canary Islands, off the coast of northwest Africa. It is a popular landscape palm in warm parts of the United States, especially in California, Arizona, Texas and Florida. |
| Roots | A thick, fibrous mass that spreads at the base of the trunk. Like other palms it has no taproot and no growth rings. Roots rarely hurt foundations, but they are easy to damage by trenching or lowering the soil level. |
| Wood | Palms have fibrous trunk tissue, not true wood, and no cambium. Trunk pieces are heavy and fibrous, and they are a poor firewood. They are usually hauled off or chipped. |
| Storm risk | lowThe thick trunk and heavy crown are fairly wind-tolerant. The risk comes from heavy dead fronds and fruit stalks that fall, and from older palms with rot at the base. |
Typical ranges, not guarantees. Soil, water, space and care change how a tree grows. Storm risk is our general rating for the species, not an inspection.
For homeowners
Caring for a canary island date palm
Best time to prune
Remove only dead, brown fronds and old flower or fruit stalks, once a year or so. Leave all green fronds. Some arborists prefer to prune in the warm, dry season.
Avoid pruning
Do not cut green fronds and do not do a hurricane cut. Palms cannot heal wounds, and cutting off green fronds can starve the palm. Avoid using dirty tools, since some palm diseases spread on blades.
More on timing: when to prune trees.
- Pruning should be done by a trained pro who cleans tools between palms. Fusarium wilt can spread on dirty saw blades and kill palms.
- Give it plenty of room. Mature palms are wide, with a large, heavy crown.
- Avoid watering the trunk and crown with a sprinkler. Soaked crowns tend to rot.
- Keep lawn mowers and string trimmers away from the trunk base. Wounds open the way for decay.
Safety first
Do not climb a tree or use a chainsaw on storm-loaded or broken wood. If a tree or limb is touching power lines, stay away and call the utility. If someone is in danger, call 911. For anything big, hire a local insured pro: read how to hire a tree service and is my tree dangerous?

For tree crews
Field notes: working on canary island date palm
- 1Wear gloves, face and eye protection. The spines at the base of each frond are sharp and can cause deep puncture wounds.
- 2Disinfect saws, pole saws and chain blades between palms. Fusarium wilt is spread by tools.
- 3Look for one-sided frond death. It is a classic sign of Fusarium wilt. Report it to your state agriculture department.
- 4Do not pile cut fronds and trunks near other palms. Haul to an approved site.
Removal notes
The frond bases and leaf stems hold sharp spines near the trunk, so crews need good gloves, face and eye protection. Large trunks are very heavy, wet and fibrous, so plan on a crane or bucket truck and a way to haul the pieces. Do not use the same saw on other palms without cleaning it, since Fusarium wilt is a known problem in this species and spreads on dirty tools.
Wood
Palms have fibrous trunk tissue, not true wood, and no cambium. Trunk pieces are heavy and fibrous, and they are a poor firewood. They are usually hauled off or chipped.

Canary Island Date Palm: common questions
How fast does a Canary Island date palm grow?
Slowly at first and a bit faster once the trunk starts to form. It can take many years to reach the full height.
Why do the lower fronds on my palm turn brown?
Some browning of the oldest fronds is normal. A lot of browning, one-sided death of fronds or a fast decline can be a sign of Fusarium wilt, a nutrient problem or root rot. Have an arborist check.
What is Fusarium wilt in palms?
It is a soil fungus disease that blocks the water-carrying tissue in the palm. It is a serious threat to Canary Island date palms. It spreads on pruning tools and there is no cure once the palm is infected.
How often should I trim a Canary Island date palm?
Typically once a year is enough. Only remove dead brown fronds and old fruit stalks.
Are the spines dangerous?
Yes. The lower part of each frond has long, sharp spines that can cause deep wounds. A pro should wear heavy gloves and face and eye protection.
When should I remove a Canary Island date palm?
When the crown is dying, the palm has Fusarium wilt, the trunk is soft or it leans and threatens a home. A certified arborist can confirm the cause. Get two or three written quotes.
