Hiring a tree service in California
State license required
California requires a state license for at least some tree work. Ask the company to show it. See the California state rules page for details and official links.
- Ask for a certificate of liability insurance and workers' compensation, and confirm it with the insurer.
- Check the state rules page for California: paid tree work above the minor work limit needs a contractor license from the CSLB, and new tree service contractors apply for the C-49 Tree and Palm classification.
- Look up the license number on the CSLB website before signing a contract.
- Ask about experience with native oaks and with fire-clearance work if you need it.
- Get two or three written quotes that say what is included for cleanup and haul-away.
