Tree service in Portland, ME: how to choose, local facts and permits

By Umair Nawaz, founder of Lirevon Updated How we check facts

Local facts

Portland tree companies by the numbers

From our own October 2026 check of Google Maps listings for "tree service" and "tree removal". Totals only: we do not name or rank these companies.

  • 18

tree service companies we found in the Portland area

  • 11%

of those listings had no website

  • 34

Google reviews on the median listing

  • 58–170

reviews on the three most-reviewed listings

What this means when you hire

  • A company with no website is common here. Judge it by insurance, a clear written quote and recent reviews.
  • About half the listings had fewer than 34 reviews. A low count can just mean a newer company; read what customers say.
  • A big review count is a good sign, not a promise. Still get two or three written quotes.

Storm season

Storms in Maine

Snow, ice and nor'easters are most common from late fall into spring. Late summer and fall can bring the remains of tropical storms.

After a storm: stay clear of leaning or split trees, call the utility for downed lines and 911 if anyone is in danger. Read what to do after a storm or see live storm warnings.

Permits

Tree permits in Portland

We could not confirm a city tree permit rule for Portland. Call the city planning or forestry office before removing a large tree, and check your HOA rules.

Short explanation, not legal advice. See tree permits by city and what to ask about permits.

Hiring checklist

Before you hire in Portland

  1. 1Get two or three written quotes that list cleanup, wood and stump work, and the start date.
  2. 2Ask for a certificate of liability insurance and workers’ compensation, sent by the insurer, and check the dates.
  3. 3Ask who gets any Portland tree permit and who pays the fee. Put it in the written quote.
  4. 4Ask whether a certified arborist will look at the tree, especially for pruning, disease or a tree near the house.
  5. 5Read recent Google reviews and look at how the owner replies, not just the star rating.
  6. 6Do not pay the whole job up front. A fair deposit is normal for big jobs; full payment comes when the work is done.
  7. 7Be careful with anyone who knocks after a storm and pushes you to sign today.
  8. 8Never climb, cut near power lines or touch a downed line. Call the utility for lines and 911 if anyone is in danger.
  9. 9Maine requires an arborist license for arborist work done for pay. Check the state rules page.

Tree service in Portland: questions

How do I choose a tree service in Portland, ME?

Get two or three written quotes from insured local companies, ask for proof of insurance sent by the insurer, read recent Google reviews and ask who handles any city permit. In our October 2026 check we found 18 tree companies listed on Google Maps in the Portland area, so you have choices.

How many tree service companies are there in Portland?

Our October 2026 check of Google Maps found 18 tree service companies in the Portland, ME area after removing duplicates, franchises and unrelated businesses. The real number may be higher, because some crews are not on Google Maps.

Is it a red flag if a Portland tree company has no website?

Not on its own. 11% of the Portland listings we checked had no website. Look instead at insurance, a written quote, recent reviews and how clearly they answer your questions.

How many Google reviews should a good tree company have?

There is no magic number. The median Portland listing we checked had 34 reviews and the three most-reviewed had between 58 and 170 reviews. A newer company can be good with few reviews; read what customers say and how the owner replies.

Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Portland?

We could not confirm a city rule for Portland. Call the city planning or forestry office before removing a large tree, and check your HOA. Short explanation, not legal advice.

When is storm season in Portland?

Snow, ice and nor'easters are most common from late fall into spring. Late summer and fall can bring the remains of tropical storms. Have large trees near the house checked before the season starts.

When is the best time to prune trees in Portland?

Late winter, while trees are dormant, is a good time for most pruning. Snow and frozen ground can make access easier for heavy work. Ask a certified arborist about your tree.

How much does tree removal cost?

It depends on the tree size, how close it is to the house or lines, access for equipment, cleanup and stump work. We do not publish prices for tree work. Get two or three written quotes so you can compare.

Why are only some Portland companies named on this page?

We only name a company when its owner claims a free profile and agrees to show it. We do not rank companies, there is no pay-to-rank, and claimed profiles are shown in alphabetical order. To see every local company, search Google Maps and read their reviews.
