American Chestnut at a glance

Quick facts about american chestnut
Height Historically 60-100 ft; most surviving trees are sprouts of 10-30 ft
Spread 40-60 ft for a full-sized tree
Growth rate Fast when young
USDA zones 4-8
Lifespan Historic trees lived 200 years or more. Today most trees are root sprouts that die back from blight long before then.
Type Deciduous
Native range Eastern United States, mainly the Appalachian region from Maine to Georgia and Alabama and west to the Ohio valley. It was once one of the most common forest trees there.
Roots Deep, wide-spreading roots that can sprout new stems after the main stem dies. The living root system is why the species survives in the woods as shrubby sprouts.
Wood Light for a hardwood, straight-grained and very decay-resistant, with a lot of tannin. It was used for rails, beams and furniture. Reclaimed wood is still prized. It is a so-so firewood that can spit.
Storm risk mediumHealthy chestnut wood is strong, but blight-infected stems die, and dead standing stems grow brittle. Few large old trees remain, and those that do can have decay.

Typical ranges, not guarantees. Soil, water, space and care change how a tree grows. Storm risk is our general rating for the species, not an inspection.

For homeowners

Caring for a american chestnut

Best time to prune

Late fall to winter while dormant. Remove dead and cankered stems back to healthy tissue and clean tools between cuts. Keep wounds small.

Avoid pruning

Avoid wet-weather pruning, which can help spread fungus. Avoid topping and avoid injuring the bark, since wounds can be entry points for blight.

More on timing: when to prune trees.

  • Chestnut blight is a fungus that causes sunken, orange-brown cankers on the bark and kills the stem above. It wiped out most large trees in the 1900s.
  • If you think you have a large surviving American chestnut, take clear photos of the leaves, bark and nuts and contact your state forestry office or extension service.
  • Do not move wood or nuts from sick trees to other areas.
  • Chinese chestnut and hybrids are a more common choice for yard planting, since they handle the blight better.

Safety first

Do not climb a tree or use a chainsaw on storm-loaded or broken wood. If a tree or limb is touching power lines, stay away and call the utility. If someone is in danger, call 911. For anything big, hire a local insured pro: read how to hire a tree service and is my tree dangerous?

For tree crews

Field notes: working on american chestnut

  • 1Look for orange or tan cankers, swollen bark and dead stems with leaves still attached.
  • 2Clean tools and boots when moving between sick trees and healthy chestnuts.
  • 3Sprouts are common from old stumps. Ask the customer if they want them left or removed.
  • 4If you find a large healthy tree, tell the customer before you cut, and suggest they call the state forestry office.

Removal notes

Most American chestnuts the crew will see are small, blight-damaged sprouts, while large old trees are rare. If a customer has a large, healthy-looking one, it may be worth a call to a state forestry office or extension service before removal, since breeding and restoration programs track surviving trees. Dead standing stems can be brittle.

Wood

Light for a hardwood, straight-grained and very decay-resistant, with a lot of tannin. It was used for rails, beams and furniture. Reclaimed wood is still prized. It is a so-so firewood that can spit.

American Chestnut: common questions

What happened to the American chestnut?

Chestnut blight, a fungal disease brought in on imported trees in the early 1900s, killed billions of trees across the East. The roots often survive and send up new sprouts, which later get infected again.

Are there any big American chestnut trees left?

A small number of large trees survive in scattered places, and some may be less affected by the blight. Most trees seen today are small sprouts.

How can I tell American chestnut from chestnut oak?

The leaves are similar, with coarse teeth, but American chestnut leaves have coarse, sharp-tipped teeth, while chestnut oak teeth are rounded. Chestnut oak also has thick, deeply ridged bark and acorns, not spiny burrs.

Can American chestnut be saved?

Research groups and universities are breeding trees with more blight resistance, but there is no widely available fix for yard owners yet. Check with your state extension service for the latest.

Can I plant an American chestnut in my yard?

You can, but it will probably get blight. If you want chestnuts, ask a nursery about blight-resistant hybrids or Chinese chestnut. Your extension service can advise on what grows in your area.

Should I remove a dead chestnut sprout?

Small dead stems away from power lines and buildings can sometimes be cut from the ground with a hand saw. Anything tall, large or near a structure should be handled by an insured pro, and never cut near power lines. Get two or three written quotes.
