American sycamore at a glance

Quick facts about american sycamore
Height 75-100 ft, sometimes taller
Spread 60-80 ft
Growth rate Fast
USDA zones 4-9
Lifespan typically 200-300 years
Type Deciduous
Native range Eastern and central North America, from Maine and southern Ontario south to Florida and Texas. It is most common along streams, rivers and in bottomland soils.
Roots Wide and shallow to moderately deep. The tree likes moist soil and its roots often go after water, so roots can reach pipes, drains and septic lines.
Wood Moderately hard and heavy with interlocked grain, which makes it very hard to split. It has been used for butcher blocks, furniture parts and crates. It is not a favorite firewood because it is hard to split and burns smoky if not well seasoned.
Storm risk highSycamores get very large, and older trees are often hollow or decayed inside. Big limbs can drop without much warning, especially in wind, wet soil and after storms.

Typical ranges, not guarantees. Soil, water, space and care change how a tree grows. Storm risk is our general rating for the species, not an inspection.

Caring for a american sycamore

Best time to prune

Prune in the dormant season to remove dead and weak wood. Do any structural work while the tree is young so that it is not forced into large cuts later.

Avoid pruning

Avoid large cuts on old trees where decay is likely. Avoid topping. Do not prune heavily during wet spring weather when leaf diseases spread.

More on timing: when to prune trees.

  • Sycamore bark peels off in patches, giving the trunk a white and tan look. This is normal and not a disease.
  • Leaves can look brown and spotty in a cool, wet spring. This is often anthracnose. Trees usually grow new leaves and recover.
  • Do not plant one close to a house, pool, driveway or septic system. It becomes a very large tree.
  • Have old, large sycamores inspected by a certified arborist. Hollow trunks and large dead limbs can be a safety risk.
  • Rake up fallen leaves, twigs and bark in the yard. Large trees drop a lot of debris.

Safety first

Do not climb a tree or use a chainsaw on storm-loaded or broken wood. If a tree or limb is touching power lines, stay away and call the utility. If someone is in danger, call 911. For anything big, hire a local insured pro: read how to hire a tree service and is my tree dangerous?

Field notes: working on american sycamore

  • 1Treat large old sycamores as likely hollow. Sound the trunk and check the root flare before you climb or tie in.
  • 2Limbs are heavy and the wood does not split easily. Plan for crane or heavy rigging on big jobs.
  • 3Expect a lot of debris. Bark flakes, leaves and seed balls can cover a site.
  • 4Wood is wet and heavy when green. Check truck weight and chipper capacity before you load.
  • 5Fine hairs on new leaves and seed balls can irritate eyes and lungs. Use eye and face protection when cutting and chipping.

Removal notes

Mature sycamores are often huge, and they are frequently hollow or have decay at the base or in large limbs. Plan for heavy rigging, and test for decay before any climb. Large limbs and trunk sections can be very heavy and hard to split. Expect a big volume of wood and chips, plus stump sprouts. Falling bark pieces, leaves and seed balls add to cleanup.

American sycamore: common questions

Why is my sycamore losing leaves in spring?

The most common reason is anthracnose, a fungal leaf disease that is worse in cool, wet spring weather. It can kill young shoots and leaves, but the tree usually puts out new growth. Raking and removing fallen leaves helps reduce the fungus.

Why does sycamore bark peel off?

The outer bark does not stretch as the trunk grows, so it flakes off in patches. This shows the lighter inner bark and is normal for the species.

Is a sycamore dangerous?

Healthy young sycamores are not unusually dangerous, but old, large trees often have hollow trunks or dead limbs. If you see large dead branches, cracks, fungus at the base or a leaning trunk, ask a certified arborist to inspect it.

Can sycamore roots damage my sewer line?

They can. Sycamores like moist soil, and their roots can enter pipes through small cracks or joints. Plant them far from lines and drains, and ask a plumber or arborist if you have slow drains near a large tree.

How fast does a sycamore grow?

It grows fast when it has moist soil and sun. It is common for young trees to add around 2 ft or more a year, though growth varies with site and weather.

Is sycamore good firewood?

It is not the best. It is very hard to split because of the interlocked grain and it must be seasoned well. If you must burn it, split it green and let it dry for a long time.
