For homeowners
Can I grow a tree from a seed or a cutting?
Short answer
Yes, many trees can be grown from seed or cuttings, but it takes patience and some species are harder than others. Seeds from named or hybrid trees may not match the parent. Buying a healthy young tree from a local nursery is the simpler route.

The longer answer
Some trees grow readily from seed, such as many oaks from acorns. Others need special treatment, like cold storage, before the seed will sprout. Willows and some poplars often root from cuttings.
It can take years before a seedling is big enough to plant out. Seedlings need water, protection from deer and rabbits, and weed control.
Trees that are cultivars, meaning selected named varieties, are usually grown by grafting or cuttings so they stay the same. A seed from that tree can come out different from the parent.
If you want a tree fast, a nursery tree gives a head start. Always check which species are invasive in your area before planting. Your county extension office can advise.
