For homeowners
How should I mulch around a tree?
Short answer
Spread a layer of wood chip mulch about two to four inches deep over a wide circle, and keep it a few inches back from the trunk. Do not pile mulch against the bark in a volcano shape, because it holds moisture and can hurt the tree.

The longer answer
Mulch helps hold moisture, keeps down weeds, protects roots from mower damage and moderates soil temperature. It works best when it is spread wide, often out toward the drip line if you can.
A depth of about two to four inches is common advice from extension services. Pull it back a few inches from the trunk so the root flare stays visible. Piling mulch against the trunk keeps bark wet and can invite rot and pests.
Use coarse wood chips where possible. Do not keep adding fresh layers on top of old ones year after year without checking the depth.
