For homeowners

Is it safe to hire a tree company that knocks on my door after a storm?

Short answer

Be careful. After storms, some people go door to door offering fast cleanup, and not all are insured or honest. You are not required to say yes on the spot. Ask for proof of insurance and a written quote first, and take your time unless there is real danger.

The longer answer

After a storm, many tree crews work hard to help neighbors, and some of them go from street to street. But storm weeks also bring people who have no insurance, no real equipment, or plans to take your money and leave.

You are never required to decide on the doorstep. Say you would like their name, company name, phone number, and a certificate of insurance. Then take a few minutes to check them out. Look the company up on Google Maps and read its reviews. A real local company will have a business name, a phone number that works, and a record of past customers.

Warning signs include pressure to sign now, a price that changes once the work starts, a request for the full payment up front, no written quote, and a refusal to show insurance.

If a tree is blocking a driveway or leaning on the house and you feel unsafe, you can still take a short pause. Stay away from the tree, keep family and pets clear, and call a local insured company you chose yourself. If a power line is down or touching a tree, stay far away and call the utility company. If anyone is in danger, call 911.

This is a short explanation, not legal advice.

Hiring a tree service?

Plain guides for homeowners

Safety first: stay away from downed power lines and call the utility; call 911 if anyone is in danger. Lirevon does not do tree work. Find local pros on Google Maps and read their reviews, then get two or three written quotes.
