For tree service owners

How do I price storm cleanup work fairly?

Short answer

Be clear and fair. Quote what you can see, use hourly or time-and-materials pricing when the scope is unknown, put the terms in writing before you start, and never take advantage of people in a crisis. Many states have price gouging rules after declared emergencies. This is not legal advice.

The longer answer

After a storm, demand rises, work is risky and nothing looks like a normal job. Trees may be under tension, tangled with lines or sitting on structures. That risk, plus extra hours and equipment, is a fair reason to price differently from a routine trim.

Be careful about how. Many states have price gouging laws that apply after a declared emergency. Check the rules in your state before you raise prices, and ask a lawyer if you are unsure. This is a short explanation, not legal advice.

A fair approach: use your normal cost per crew hour, add real extra costs such as overtime or special equipment, and keep your profit margin reasonable. If you cannot see the full scope, use an hourly or time-and-materials rate with a stated crew size, and tell the customer how you will report the hours.

Put it in writing before work starts. A short signed or texted agreement that lists the rate, scope and what is not included prevents disputes. Take photos before and after, which also helps customers with insurance claims.

Safety comes first. Do not work near downed lines. Tell the customer to call the utility. Do not send a crew onto storm-loaded wood without a plan.

Plan before the next storm: who answers calls, how you triage, and which jobs come first.
