How do I shape a young tree?
Short answer
For most shade trees, prune a young tree lightly to build one strong main stem, called a central leader, and remove only dead, broken or crossing branches. Wait a year or so after planting before shaping, and keep each cut small. Check it every year or two.

The longer answer
A young tree is easier to shape than an old one, and small cuts heal fast. The aim is a strong frame that will carry the tree for decades.
Pick one main upright stem. If two stems compete, take out the weaker one. Remove branches that rub, cross or grow straight down. Choose side branches that are well spaced up the trunk.
Keep the lower branches for the first few years, because they help the trunk grow thicker. Take them off a little at a time as the tree grows. Cut just outside the branch collar and leave no stubs. You do not need to paint the cuts.
Many trees do best with pruning in late winter, but some need other timing. If you are not sure, ask your local extension office or a certified arborist to show you the first time.
