For homeowners
Should I pay a deposit to a tree service before the work?
Short answer
A small deposit can be normal for big or scheduled jobs, but never pay the full amount up front. Pay the final balance only after the work is done and you have checked it. Get the deposit amount and the payment terms written in the quote or contract.

The longer answer
Some honest tree companies ask for a deposit, mostly on large jobs where they must book a crane or reserve crew days. A deposit helps them hold your date. It is not a red flag by itself.
What matters is the size of the deposit and how it is written down. Ask for the amount and the payment terms on the quote. A fair pattern is a smaller part up front for big jobs and the rest when the work is finished and you are happy with it. Many small jobs need no deposit at all.
Be careful if a company asks for the full price in cash before it starts, will not give you a written quote, or pressures you to pay right now. Be extra careful with anyone who shows up at your door unasked and wants money today.
Pay by a method that leaves a record, such as a check or a card, so you can show what you paid. Ask for a receipt. Before you pay the last amount, walk the yard and check that the work matches the quote and the cleanup is done.
If a company will not put the terms in writing, that is a good reason to say no and call another one.
