For homeowners

What should I do if a tree falls on a power line?

Short answer

Stay far away, keep other people back, and call 911 and your utility company. Treat every downed line as live. Do not touch the tree or anything touching it.

The longer answer

A downed line can carry deadly electricity, and the ground, a fence or a puddle near it can be live too. Do not try to move the tree or push the line away with a stick or tool.

Call 911 and give the exact location. Then call your utility company's emergency number. If the line is sparking or something is burning, tell 911 right away.

If a line has landed on a car, stay in the car and wait for help unless there is a fire. Tell the 911 operator it is a live-line emergency.

Only hire a tree service after the utility says the line is safe. Only trained utility workers should handle trees touching lines.

This is general information, not legal advice.
