For homeowners
Why are tree service quotes so different from each other?
Short answer
Quotes differ because companies plan the job differently. Crew size, equipment, insurance, cleanup, stump work, and how the tree will be taken down all change the number. A very low quote can mean missing insurance or missing cleanup, so compare what is written, not just the total.

The longer answer
Two companies can look at the same tree and write very different quotes. That does not always mean one is cheating you.
Several things change the price. One company may plan to use a crane, which is faster but needs a big machine. Another may climb and lower the wood in pieces by hand. One may include hauling away all the wood and chips, while another leaves the wood in your yard. One may include grinding the stump and another may not.
Business costs also differ. A company that carries full insurance, pays workers properly, and keeps equipment in good shape has higher costs than one that cuts corners. That cost is part of what you are paying for, because it protects you if something goes wrong.
The best way to compare is to ask each company for a written quote that lists the work in plain words: which tree or trees, what will be removed, what happens to the wood, whether stump grinding is included, and whether cleanup is included.
Put the quotes side by side and compare line by line. If one is much lower, ask what is missing. If one is much higher, ask what they are including that others are not. Get two or three written quotes, and do not rush into the first one.
