For homeowners

Why does my tree company keep sending a new certificate of insurance?

Short answer

A certificate of insurance is a short proof-of-coverage document that an insurance agent or insurer issues for a company. Companies send new ones because policies renew or change. Always check that the company name matches and the dates cover your job day. This is general information, not legal advice.

The longer answer

Think of the certificate as a snapshot. It shows who is insured, what kinds of coverage they carry, and when the policy runs. It is not the full policy, just proof that coverage exists.

A new copy is common because policies renew each year, so the dates change. Coverage can also be added or changed during the year.

Before the job, check that the certificate names the same company you hired, that the coverage types fit the work, and that the dates include the day the crew will be on your property. Keep the newest copy with your agreement.

If the certificate is expired or the name does not match, ask for a current one. Do not accept a promise that it is on the way while the crew is standing in your yard. Call the insurer or agent listed to confirm the policy is active.
