Google review target calculator

By Umair Nawaz, founder of Lirevon Updated How we test tools

Your Google rating is an average. Pulling it up takes a known number of 5-star reviews. Enter where you are and where you want to be. Then see how long it takes at your job volume if you ask after every job.

5-star reviews needed

–

New reviews a month

–

Months to target

–

Estimate only. Assumes every new review is 5 stars and that Google shows a plain average. Google rounds the displayed rating to one decimal and may weigh reviews differently.

How the maths works

Rating × reviews = total stars. To reach the target you need enough extra 5-star reviews that (total stars + 5 × new) ÷ (reviews + new) equals the target. Solved for "new": (target − rating) × reviews ÷ (5 − target). Then divide by the reviews you collect a month, which is jobs × the share who reply to the request.

In our October 2026 check of 6,842 tree companies, the median review count was 44. The review request in the system sends the ask by text the moment a job is marked done.

Questions about Google ratings

How many 5-star reviews do I need to raise my Google rating?

It depends on your rating, your review count and your target. The formula is (target minus rating) times reviews, divided by (5 minus target). For example, a 4.5 rating with 38 reviews needs about 57 new 5-star reviews to reach 4.8. Enter your own numbers above to get yours.

Can my Google rating ever reach a perfect 5.0?

Not in practice once you have any review below 5 stars, because the rating is an average. Google shows one decimal, so a very high average may display as 5.0, but that takes a lot of reviews. Aim for 4.8 or 4.9 and keep asking.

How does Google work out my star rating?

We assume a plain average of all your star ratings, and this calculator uses that. Google does not publish every detail and may weigh reviews differently, so treat the result as an estimate.

What share of customers leave a review when asked?

It differs from company to company. The calculator starts at 20% as a working assumption, not a measured figure. After a month of asking by text after every job, replace it with your own number.

How long will it take to reach my target rating?

Divide the 5-star reviews you need by the reviews you collect each month. Reviews per month are your jobs times the share of customers who reply. More jobs, a faster ask and a direct review link all shorten the time.

Does one bad review hurt a lot?

One low review lowers the average by a small amount, and the effect gets smaller as your review count grows. A calm, helpful public reply also matters to people reading it. Our review reply builder helps you write one.

When is the best time to ask for a review?

Right after the job, while the customer is happy, by text with a direct link. Ask every customer, not only the ones you think will be happy. Our review request builder writes the message for you.

Can I offer a reward or discount for a review?

No. Google's policy does not allow rewards in exchange for reviews, and you should not ask only happy customers to review you. Ask everyone the same way and let the reviews be honest.

Can I remove a bad Google review?

Only if it breaks Google's rules, for example fake, spam or off-topic content. You can flag it for review. If it is a real customer who is unhappy, reply politely and try to make it right.

Should I buy reviews to get there faster?

No. Fake or bought reviews break Google's rules, can get reviews removed and can put your profile at risk. They also go against our honesty rules. Short explanation, not legal advice.
