Tree care in Nevada

Nevada is mostly dry desert, with very hot summers in the south around Las Vegas and colder, snowier winters in the north and the Sierra foothills. Desert trees, palms and irrigated shade trees are common in the south, and pines and cottonwoods in the north. Water, heat and wind drive most tree care.

Storm season

Strong winds and summer thunderstorms with flash floods are the main risks, with snow in the north in winter. Wildfire season in the north often runs from summer into fall.

Main storm months: July to September for thunderstorms and flash floods; June to October for wildfire; December to March for snow in the north

After a storm, stay away from downed lines and call the utility. Call 911 if anyone is in danger. Read what to do after a storm and our storm guides.

When to prune

In the hot south, avoid heavy pruning in peak summer heat and ask an arborist about palms and desert trees. In the north, late winter is a common time for dormant pruning.

Each species page lists its own best and worst times. See the month-by-month tree care calendar and when to prune.

Tree permits

Tree rules are set mostly by cities and counties. Many have tree or landscape rules, so check your city before removals. This is general information, not legal advice.
